Guerrilla Marketing a Metal Band

Good old Wikipedia tells us that:

"The concept of guerrilla marketing was invented as an unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination rather than a big marketing budget. Typically, guerrilla marketing campaigns are unexpected and unconventional; potentially interactive;[1] and consumers are targeted in unexpected places."

I’ve tended to find that when working on a marketing project, these tend to be the most fun and you can really let your imagination work and this type of marketing and really do wonders for your campaign. Some great examples of this guerilla attack include flash mobs, and these adverts for charities and businesses:

So how can we apply this to marketing a band?

Well one of the best examples of this comes from a band I recently befriended on Facebook.

Here Lies Affliction are a North-West London band playing a mixture of hardcore in the same vein as Despised Icon and Hatebreed, they’ve really impressed me with their creativity in marketing by setting up a secret gig in the car park of this year’s Download festival. The video below is a good insight into how the day went for them and although the men in Hi-viz jackets and grumpy faces were quick to turn off the music there is a definite sense that the band made a mark and created new fans that day.

You can find the band on facebook & myspace SN sites

Below is a guerrilla campaign we did for our album launch earlier in the year, when we had a crew dress up as weird circus freaks and attack people in the town centre. So keep it creative try out your own guerrilla campaign!
